How often is the data recorded? (Granularity)
The data in this tracker is tracked in daily granularity. This means that there is a figure for every day. So, you can see how events, such as bank holidays, or specific days of the week can affect bookings in self-catering accommodation.
How often is the tracker updated?
This tracker is updated every month for the month previous. It should usually be updated within the first 10 days of the month.
What is the source of the data?
This data is collected by SuperControl, which is one of the most used booking and property management systems in the UK. It therefore provides robust data regarding demand for self-catering accommodation.
What does the data tell me?
The data in this tracker tells you data relating to self-catering accommodation bookings in Devon and Somerset.
Metrics
The following metrics are available:
Length of stay: average length of stay of guests who arrived during the time period selected.
Booking Lead Time: how long before the guest/s arrived did they book their stay.
Bed spaces (capacity): average bed space capacity of properties guests arrived in during the time period selected.
Sample Size: the number of bookings in the data set. This is important when undertaking analysis as it provides an indicator of the robustness of the data. A sample of 100 or more is good and will have a relatively small margin of error. Less than 100, the margin of error increases. Samples of less than 30 should carry a statistical health warning.
Important things to remember about this data…
Sample size is very important with this tracker. If you filter your data by Property Location on a daily granularity, the sample size may be small (depending on the density of properties in the area) and the data may not be reliable. If you analyse the data in this way, use monthly or annual granularity to increase the sample size. As a general rule, check your sample size if you filter this data, before using or publishing any findings.
What can I filter on?
Property Location: selecting one or more property locations filters the data so that you only see bookings made at properties in those locations. The locations are: East Devon, Exeter, Mid Devon, North Devon, Plymouth, Somerset, South Hams, Teignbridge, Torbay, Torridge and West Devon.
Visitor Residence: selecting an area of visitor residence filters the data so that you only see bookings made by visitors who live in that area. The areas of visitor residence are: in England - East Midlands, East of England, London, North East, North West, South East, South West, West Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber; Scotland; Wales; Northern Ireland; and Overseas – Europe, North America, Rest of World. There is also a category GB-Unknown for those visitors that cannot be located to a region. More information about the boundaries of the UK regions can be found at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Territorial_Level
